Few people realize that private aircraft were integral to Sam Walton’s strategy in building the Walmart empire. As a private pilot, Walton utilized his Cessna C414 to efficiently travel throughout Arkansas and nearby states, enabling him to visit stores, scout new locations, and recruit staff.

Based in Bentonville, Arkansas, Walton faced significant travel challenges in the early days due to the lack of interstate highways. A road trip to another store could take eight hours, while a short flight reduced the travel time to just one hour.

To grow his business, Walton developed a fleet of airplanes to serve as essential business tools.

Today, Walmart operates over 4,000 stores in the US alone. The company’s travel program facilitates employee travel to various global locations, including areas not well-served by commercial airports.

While Walmart heavily relies on scheduled airlines, it also maintains a fleet of 22 private jets (as per latest available records), making it one of the largest corporate fleets worldwide. Walmart executives rarely need to stay overnight and often visit multiple locations in a single day, highlighting the substantial benefits of corporate aircraft.

“Walmart is probably the most penny-pinching, efficient company on the planet,” says Chris MacDonald, an ethics expert and visiting professor at the Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, California.
